PHULKARI JACKET - GULAB
Refashioned traditional vintage phulakri embroidery work transformed into a timeless, one of a kind long jacket.
A little-known freedom fighter from Bakshiwala village in Punjab, Gulab Kaur stormed the traditional male bastion of armed revolutionary struggle.
Giving up on the promise of a good life abroad, she returned to India to join the fight against the British. In the process she almost single-handedly dispelled the typical notion of the Indian women as a docile lot and subordinate, proved that they were definitely at par with the men when it came to armed uprisings.
This vintage phulkari long jacket honours Gulab Kaur with its muted fiery colours, brass button closures, stern long sleeves and a straight hem. While ‘phulkari’ means floral work, it doesn’t just include flowers but also vibrant geometric shapes and motifs as well. The dynamic darn stitch on the wrong side of the fabric with resham thread is a trademark Punjabi craft practised by the women embodying as well as celebrating womanhood in all its prettiness and pluck.
